Alcohol

Alcohol has long been recognized as a contributing factor to the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Botswana. Up to 95% of recreational substance use is limited to alcohol in the country and this correlates with a variety of social and health problems (National Strategic Framework, 2010). Some of these problems include gender violence, engaging in risky sexual behaviours, such as multiple sexual partnerships, unprotected sex, sex with high risk partners and non adherence to treatment protocols for HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis.

At YOHO, the issue of alcohol has been addressed mainly through the development of theatrical plays with themes focused on the potential risks involved with drinking alcohol and their health. In addition, discussions about the issue of alcohol are held within the Seboza Clubs and on the Seboza Talk radio show. Efforts are being made, in conjunction with other public awareness campaigns, to encourage young people specifically to drink responsibly and to make healthy decisions as it relates to alcohol consumption and HIV/AIDS.
